Enfield Art CircleOuting to Waterperry - July 2011 Rather than art inaction at home (so
often the case chez moi), on 23 July it was “Art In Action” at Waterperry
Gardens in rural Oxfordshire (you could tell it was Oxfordshire – every other
visitor was accompanied by a pedigree dog).
It was indeed all action there on a balmy day. If you wanted to witness the heart-stopping process of Venetian-style glass blowing, this was the place. And a few yards away, weather-vanes were being beaten out of copper. A pavilion or two further on, Japanese woodcuts were being delicately created. Then someone was drawing an eagle on a wall (not Banksy).
Then here was a veteran painter in
oils with a magical de-magnifying glass (almost like something out of Alice).
And there was a potter making something taller than himself.
If you ventured into the House, you
could try to make sense of the subtle modern frescoes. These aim to impart
lessons in living a good life. We reflected on such matters as we wolfed tea
and buns before squeezing back into the mini-bus. After that festival of creativity, I felt that the M25 was
indeed a thing of beauty in its own way – and sure enough nothing stood in our
way en route back home.

ENFIELD ART CIRCLE 79th Annual Exhibition 2011 The Exhibition at Capel
Manor has as usual been a success. We had many visitors who enjoyed the
exhibition and who put their comments into our visitors book. Their entries included “Excellent quality and range”, “The standard
this year was very high”, “ very enjoyable, thank you,” “Delightful,” and so
forth. There was also praise for the variety of media and skill in which the
artists handled them.
Madeline Hall who opened the
exhibition for us this year thoroughly enjoyed walking around and viewing the
work. She is retiring from Capel this year, and wanted a painting to remind her
of it. She chose Hilary Jack’s oil work of Capel gardens by the ruins. Well
done Hilary.
Again I thank the sub-committee and
committee members for all that they do as well as the Selection, and Hanging
committees. The Social committee members did us proud with tasty sandwiches and
drinks. I also thank all the members of the E.A.C. for stewarding and for
putting forward such a skilled body of work. We sold twenty one art works from
off the walls and 13 paintings from the browser.
The ‘Favourite Painting’ chosen was ‘Mr
and Mrs Basham’ by Keith Moreton
Runners up ‘Water Lily Pond’ by Jay Hartstean and ‘Trees by the Lake’ by Heather
Brown
Keith Morton’s votes went into the
hat and the winner ,Mrs. Leary from Bush Hill Park area, will receive a season
ticket for free entrance to Capel Manor Gardens.

Art Circle Painting Day A small group of members spent an enjoyable and fruitful painting day at Theobalds. The
A very pleasant local venue for further visits.
Nancy Gadsdon
Many of us will remember days, weekends and summer week art courses at Theobalds, tutored first by Muriel Archer and then jointly with Peter Brown, later after she had moved to St Ives, by PeterBrown, our President.
Often we were staying there alongside Southgate Opera rehearsing their
next production, Dora Basham was part of that group, and they gave us
many joyous evenings with their expert operatic samples and also great cabaret offerings.
I went along with Peter as Art Hosts and snuck onto Cyril What lovely memories Theobalds holds. Sylvia 'B', Newsletter Editor
